1. Relative Pronouns: WHO, WHICH, THAT
 WHO = used for people
 WHICH = used for things
 THAT = used for both people and things * Match the questions with 
 the appropriate answers. 
 Note how to use “who”, 
 “which” or “that” in the

 2. Relative clauses
 a, Defining relative clause.
 Eg: The novel has been lost. You gave me the novel on my birthday.
 →The novel which you gave me on my birthday has been lost.
 (defining relative clause)
* Mệnh đề xác định: được sử dụng để xác định danh từ đứng trước nó, 
nếu không có mệnh đề này thì người đọc/người nghe không biết người 
viết/ nói đề cập đến người/ vật nào.
 b, Non- defining relative clause
 Eg: Viet Nam exports rice. Viet Nam is in the Southest Asia.
 → Viet Nam, which is in the Southest Asia, exports rice.
 (non- defining clause)
 * Mệnh đề không xác định : được sử dụng để cung cấp thêm cho 
 danh từ đứng trước nó, trong văn viết nó được tách khỏi các 
 thành phần khác trong câu bằng dấu phẩy. Notes:
 * We can’t use “that” in non- 
 defining relative clause
 * We can’t leave “who/which” 
 in non- defining relative 
 clause Underline the relative clause in the sentence. 
Then add commas to separate the non – defining 
relative clause from the rest of the sentence.
a) Viet Nam exports rice. Viet Nam is in the Southest Asia.
 → Viet Nam,, which is in the Southest Asia, exports rice.
b, Kangaroos which come from Australia have long tails.
c, Ba who lives onTrang Tien Street likes playing the guitar.
d, The novel that you gave me on my birthday has been lost. 
e, Neil Amstrong who first walked on the moon lived in the USA.
f, The chair that I bought yesteray is broken.

Then add commas to separate the non – defining 
relative clause from the rest of the sentence.

Exercise 3 (page 82). Replace each underlined 
clause with a clause you have written. You may use 
facts or your imagination. 
Examples:
